Senator Todd Young of Indiana voted for the Laken Riley Act Monday.
The bill passed the Senate 64-35 and now heads to the House for consideration.
The legislation would require U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to arrest illegal aliens who commit an offense of theft, burglary, larceny, shoplifting, or assault of a law enforcement officer, or any crime that results in death or serious bodily injury to another person.
It would mandate that these aliens are detained until they are removed from the United States so they cannot reoffend or commit further crimes.
